What are the changes?

The Government intends to reform public service pension schemes and introduce changes from 2015 (the new Local Government Pension Scheme may be introduced earlier, in 2014). Details of the scheme changes are being developed through discussions with employers and trades unions.

The designs for the NHS, Civil Service and Teachers’ schemes have now been finalised. You should visit your scheme’s website for further details about the changes and how they may affect you:

• Principal Civil Service Pension Scheme

The key final design features of the new Firefighter pension scheme have been agreed. The remaining scheme details are being finalised and will be announced in due course.

The Government has set out its preferred scheme design for the Police Pension Scheme. Changes can now be suggested to the Government’s preferred scheme design, within the cost ceiling set, through discussions between the Home Office and the Police Negotiating Board.

The design of the Local Government Pensions Scheme (LGPS) is still being discussed by the Government, the Local Government Association and trades unions. The final scheme design will be announced in due course.

Discussions continue about the changes that will be made to the remaining public service pension schemes. Further information about the changes to the Armed Forces and the Judiciary schemes will become available as the reforms progress.

Please note that scheme members will receive information about the changes and how it will affect them from their employer and scheme.

Members closest to retirement

The Government committed to protecting those who are closest to retirement. The Final Agreements will set out the detail of this protection. If you are a member of the NHS, Civil Service or Teachers’ schemes you should visit your scheme website to familiarise yourself with the agreement details.

Changes to the remaining public service pension schemes will be finalised at a later date.
