Spending Challenge: ideas page 3
These examples show some of the main themes and ideas that have been put forward via the public sector Spending Challenge website.
They are not ideas that have been shortlisted for further work or implementation but they will all be considered individually alongside the other 60,000 ideas that have been put forward.
13. FCO accommodation allowances are too generous and pay for bigger accommodation than needed
14. Clauses should be drafted into future and existing CEO of public bodies and all SCS contracts removing severance payments where there has been a fundamental breakdown in delivery of service and be capped at 6 months pay or £40k
15. In my department internal publications are sent out both electronically and in paper based form. Stopping these paper based products would surely save a substantial amount of money and would be environmentally friendly.
16. The Army spend a fortune on contractors working on Projects when they have qualified civil servants who could do the same job. I was employed as Project Manager with the Army and was more qualified than the contractor who we hired to run a project. He was paid in excess of £400 per day!
17. Create incentives to encourage budget holders within local government to forecast and deliver savings in non staffing areas areas of their budgets. Irradicate the 'crazy spend it or lose it' attitude that they currently have
18. That we should stop the auditing of Government Departments recruitment practices. Every year we are required to do an extensive self assessment of our recruitment policy and process. We are then subjected to an audit. No other business is subject to this level of auditing on a process which is as low risk as recruitment of staff. I can understand it may be appropriate for senior roles and public appointments - but for normal staff is it really value for money?
