Libya (1993-2003)

Selected documents:

Overview

United Nations sanctions were imposed on Libya in 1992 and 1993 in the light of suspected Libyan implication in the destruction of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie in Scotland on 21 December 1988 and UTA Flight 772. Financial sanctions were imposed as part of UNSCR 883 (1993) on 11 November 1993 and came into force in the UK on 1 December 1993.

UNSCR 1192 (1998) provided for the suspension of UN sanctions should the Secretary-General of the UN report to the Security Council that the two persons accused of the bombing of the Pan Am flight had arrived in the Netherlands for the purposes of trial.

On 5 April 1999 the Secretary-General reported that the requirements for the suspension of measures had been met, and therefore the UN sanctions were immediately suspended.

UN sanctions were lifted on 12 September 2003 as part of UNSCR 1506 (2003).
