Gus O’Donnell, the Cabinet Secretary, launched a programme of capability reviews for all central Government departments in 2006. The aim of the reviews is to undertake a robust assessment of a departments’ capability to meet its future challenges.

The Treasury’s capability review was published on 17 December 2007.
To support the development of department’s capability, each department is given another review two years after the original. HM Treasury’s two year re-review was published on 14 December 2009.
The report noted many areas of improvement, for example leadership and strategy, and also highlighted areas for the department to continue to develop.
